About Us

Harmsworth, Townley & Co. Ltd was founded by Mr W G Townley in 1945 at the end of WWII, manufacturing high quality hand riveting tools for both the UK and World market. His background and training in The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) laid the perfect foundations for his engineering business.

During the 1950’s Mr Townley developed and patented the King Klik Lazy Tongs hand riveting tool (now copied all over the world) and at one point during the 1960s was supplying over 90% of the world hand riveter market.  As the business developed, Harmsworth, Townley & Co expanded into distributing specialist metal rivets and fasteners.

Through a series of innovative product design and marketing strategies, Mr Townley was able to steer the business through the vagaries of the British economy for over 55 years and in 2003, the Family business passed to Mr Townley’s daughter, Clare.

Combining her business acumen with her passion for sustainable development, Clare moved the entire business to new purpose-designed ‘green’ premises, invested heavily in advanced Information Technology systems and embarked on a total redefinition of the company’s business strategy. The product range now includes:

High Quality Hand Tools and Specialist Fasteners
High Power Semiconductors
Solar and Alternatively Powered Educational Gifts and Toys
Renewable Power Generation Products and Accessories

As a demonstration of her commitment, not only to her employees, customers and the environment, but also to the community as a whole, Clare set up the Werner Townley Fund for Community Cohesion, administered by the Calderdale Community Foundation.  The aim of the fund is to encourage and promote cultural harmony within the Todmorden catchment area.

Our Fasteners and Tools

Our fastener and tool stock reflects Clare’s passion for quality and sustainable development. All products must be of the highest quality and appropriate for their application if they are to last. Therefore we supply a diverse range of speciality rivets, metal and plastic fasteners and associated tooling ready for next-day delivery.

We market, import and distribute only the leading brands of American and German screw driver bits and accessories, specialist hand tools and industrial hardware.
We also manufacture the KING KLIK range of tools here in Todmorden: a range of state-of-the-art hand riveters and rivet nut tools designed for industrial maintenance and low volume production applications, as well as home and DIY use. These tools are built to last and spares are readily available.

As testament to the durability of our tools, we are frequently contacted from around the globe for spares and extra tools by customers from 30+ years ago when the Mr Townley was in charge!

Here at Harmsworth Townley, we pride ourselves on maintaining and constantly updating our wide range of specialist stock. We firmly believe that our highly personalised service is the reason that many of our customers have remained so loyal to us over the years.

From Quality and Service Comes Sustainability

Our New Premises

We love our new premises, ‘The Melting Pot’, in the picturesque market town of Todmorden on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border, nestled in the Calder Valley and surrounded by the stunning Pennine hills. Our central location in the town enables easy and sustainable access by bus, train and on foot.

Key Staff

Our staff form an essential link with our customers, providing them with the wealth of expertise and continuity of service one would expect from a family firm with 60 successful years of trading history.  You can be certain that when you contact us you will be dealing with a real person who is sympathetic to your needs, rather than with an automated voice.

Rod Iveson
Fastener and Tool Division Manager

Rod has been with the company for over 20 years and has a wealth of experience in this sometimes complex field of industrial fastenings and tools.  Please do not hesitate to contact him for sales and advice on all fastener and tool applications.

Clare says, ‘At Harmsworth, Townley & Co. Ltd we have always prided ourselves in supplying our customers with high quality goods and a high level of service’.
